“OF Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal tast
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe, . . “
John Milton—Paradise Lost
Disobedience is a supernatural thriller that I have been working on since early 2013. I developed the plot and characters back at that time and then set the story aside for a later date, as I planned to research some of the places in the story. I intend to finish and publish Disobedience in 2020, after I’ve competed Part 2 of The Balance.
I’ve written two prequel short stories that are related to the plot of disobedience, and these stories introduce two characters that will appear in the novel. This story highlights the main character, “John” (not his birth name, but one he has used for some time). John has had many aliases.
Trampling on the Blood of My Enemies is a short story, and the first to be posted. I developed the title as I was pondering the origin of using a red carpet for ceremonies. I wondered: “why red?”. Then I speculated that red, being the color of blood, might have been used after a battle. Perhaps the victor splashed the blood of the vanquished on a fabric and then walked along the carpet to celebrate the victory. Who knows? I mentioned this at a meeting of writers and the term seemed to interest them, so I decided it would be the title of a story. I then made up what the first line in the story would be, but the rest came later, to be consistent with my planned novel.
